University College London (UCL)

UCL is a major hub for cancer research, combining computational and data infrastructure, deeply phenotyped cancer cohorts and world-class imaging science to advance early detection approaches.

About the centre

UCL has been a member of the International Alliance for Cancer Early Detection (ACED) since our launch in 2019. It provides rich clinical imaging archives from early detection cohorts, an invaluable asset for our research network.

The ACED centre at UCL unites world‑class imaging science with rich biomarker data to sharpen image-based early prediction and prognosis tools. By building infrastructure to share imaging, biomarker and clinical‑outcome data from over 200,000 people, the centre is creating a powerful resource to drive the next generation of early‑detection strategies across the Alliance.

UCL is a global leader in combining deep learning and AI methodologies with dedicated state-of-the-art imaging to enhance the sensitivity and specificity of our novel early detection strategies. The centre provides dedicated computational resources with imaging technologies and expertise for the integration of imaging and non-imaging biomarkers, maximising image-derived prediction and prognosis.

Mark Emberton headshot.

UCL is delighted to be part of ACED. To date, we have transformed the early detection of prostate and lung cancers and delivered the largest clinical study in early ovarian cancer detection. Next, we will use advanced imaging to map tumour microstructure and its shifting immune landscape.
